PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for cleaning damping water, for a printer equipped with an automatic discharge separator (16), which separates pollution particles and oily residue from the damping water, sends the pollution particles and oily residue as a mixture of pollutant/damping water to a pollutant/damping water container (24) and introduces the remaining damping water into a water collection container (20), and a device for cleaning the damping water for the printer. SOLUTION: In this method, the mixture of pollutant/damping water in the pollutant/damping water vessel (24) is settled and separated by layer, and the layer containing the damping water is transferred to the damping water vessel (20) through an overflow pipe (26).
