PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of stably correcting variation in density of an image and a method of correcting the variation in density. SOLUTION: This color thermal printer 2 has a conveyance speed measurement device 27 for measuring a conveyance speed of a recording sheet 10, and a system controller 21 that controls driving of a heating element array 20 to apply recording energy to the recording sheet 10 from a heating element array 20 of a thermal head 17 by divisionally applying the recording energy thereto in two stages of the front stage (a) and the rear stage (b) when one line of image is recorded, and increases the magnitude of the recording energy applied in the rear stage (b) by varying a heating time period of the heating element so as not to create variation in density of an image due to fluctuation in the conveyance speed according to a result measured by the conveyance speed measurement device 27 in the front stage (a). It is possible to immediately deal with the fluctuation of the conveyance speed of the recording material without being influenced by an extrinsic parameter such as variation in the ambient environmental temperature or in moisture, or change with time of various components.
