PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve startability of an engine, by properly controlling combustion energy when restarting the engine. SOLUTION: This engine starter stops the engine by stopping fuel supply when realizing an engine automatic stopping condition, and automatically restarts the engine by performing combustion by supplying fuel to cylinders existing in at least an expansion stroke when stopping the engine when realizing a predetermined restarting condition. The engine starter is constituted so as to operate the engine once in the reverse rotation direction by performing the combustion by the cylinders 11 becoming a compression stroke in the first place among a plurality of cylinders existing in a compression stroke when stopping the engine, and to start the engine by performing the combustion by the other cylinder existing in the compression stroke when stopping the engine after operating the engine in the normal rotation direction by performing the combustion by at least one of the plurality of cylinders 11 existing in the expansion stroke when finishing this reverse rotation operation.
