The invention relates to a device comprising a system for the generation of gas, in particular for use of a safety element for the protection of goods and/or people, in particular for the protection of at least one occupant of a vehicle. The gas generation system is connected to said safety element, for example, an inflatable cushion and comprises an explosive charge formed by at least one primary pyrotechnical composition in a first chamber, initiated by at least one initiator having a reinforcing charge and a second composition. The first composition comprises at least one propellant, for example a double-base propellant or those based on nitrocellulose, nitrammites, lova type or those conventionally used for inflatable safety cushions, the oxygen balance of which has optionally been adjusted. The invention is characterised in that the second composition in a second chamber comprises an oxidant which provides only gas on decomposition, at least one reducing additive with a nitrogen contributing effect, said additive present in a mass proportion of less than 70 % of the mass of the primary/secondary combination.
