A beverage making apparatus for producing a desired beverage using a heated brewing substance. The apparatus includes a system and method for preventing initiating of a heating cycle when an insufficient amount of water is retain ed in the apparatus. Additional features of the brewer are provided to facilita te movement of water through the system.
