PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect and correct a defective pixel suitable for an edge direction without previously storing all pieces of information on the defective pixel in a storage means. SOLUTION: The apparatus for correcting the defective pixel has: an edge direction detection means detecting an edge direction based on picture data obtained from an image pick-up device having a plurality of pixels; a detection means detecting the defective pixel included in the image pick-up device based on the edge direction detected by the edge direction detection means; and a correction means correcting the defective pixel detected by the detection means.
