A method for operating a matrix converter in which m phases of a generator generating alternating voltage with n phases of a load are alternatingly connected via a multiple number of controllable bi-directional switches arranged in an (mxn) matrix. An improvement of the spectrum of the generated alternating voltage, i.e. of the alternating voltage with n phases is achieved by means of voltages which are added on-line to the converter output or input.
