A taxane derivative useful as an antitumor compound capable of oral administration is highly efficiently produced at low cost. An alkali metal permanganate is caused to act on a compound represented by the formula (1) (wherein R<1> means alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, or a heterocyclic group and R<2> means optionally protected hydroxy) to produce a compound represented by the formula (2), which is a raw material for an antitumor compound capable of oral administration.
