PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state imaging sensor, capable of reading out signal charges including addition of pixel signals in a shorter time, as compared with prior art. SOLUTION: A second vertical transfer signal including a transfer quiescent period for addition of signal charges (pixel signals) RG and GB is applied to the second gate group PG of each row. Even if an empty packet exists among a plurality of signal charge packets being transferred between vertical transfer sections 5A and 5B in the row direction, a transfer quiescent period is provided at the second gate group PG and the preceding signal charge packet is held, until it is overtaken by a following signal charge packet. Consequently, the preceding signal charge packet and the following signal charge packet are rendered continuous, thus obtaining an integral packet. The signal charge packets are transferred under continuous stat to third transfer gate groups SG1 and SG2, and addition of signal charges are carried out through the combination of vertical transfer by the third transfer gate groups SG1 and SG2, and horizontal transfer by a horizontal transfer section 6.
