The procedure consists of filling the tank (1), made from steel containing some 9 per cent nickel and some 50 m in diameter, with sea water and providing temporary cathodic protection for the uncoated metal surfaces of its base (2) and side walls (3) by delivering an electric current to a series of submerged anodes (51) arranged round its base with supports (52). The anodes and supports are preferably movable and set at a distance from the tank base of 5 - 10 cm in a ring lying concentrically with the center of the base and measuring about 40 - 75 per cent of its diameter. The supports can be in the form of discs of an insulating material threaded on an insulating cable connecting the anodes and resting on the base of the tank. A second set of anodes (61) is suspended vertically in the tank, preferably in lines spaced evenly in a cylindrical configuration. |
