Sensors (S1-S4) measure a motor vehicle's physical operating parameters and send a signal to a central control unit (11), where comparison of signal strength (SS) in received signals with a preset upper and lower limiting SS determines whether a number of SS that equals the number of sensors fall into a certain SS band. Otherwise, a test signal shows one sensor not working. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) A device for controlling the functional capability of a definite number of vehicle-dependent sensors on a motor vehicle that communicate with a control unit to carry out the method of the present invention; (B) and for a control unit with an onboard computer display device, a display for navigation equipment or a dashboard panel display device for showing an acoustic and/or optical test signal.
