The machine has a main framework with a conveying system having an optical reading zone for reading surface state of a non-rigid article. The zone is coupled to a lighting unit (12) and a recording camera (13) that is coupled to a computer unit for analysis and processing of signal and information from the camera. The unit (12) has upper and lower lighting units fitted to upper and lower surfaces of the article, respectively. An Independent claim is also included for a procedure of detection and recognition of a fault present at the surface of the hides of the tanneries.
