A system for conducting a marine seismic survey includes a vessel 105 coupled to a gun array 110 comprising a plurality of guns 120. The guns may be configured to form one or more of a plurality of seismic sources 150(1), 150(2), each having a different centre of source 155(1), 155(2). The gun array 110 may be arranged in a two dimensional or three dimensional pattern, and deflectors 165 may be used to steer its path. In a two dimensional gun arrangement a controller 130 can select one or other of the plurality of guns 150(1), 150(2) to as to generate a seismic source with a desired centre of source position lying approximately on a particular sail line of the vessel, which may be a planned sail line, a previously surveyed sail line, an infill line, a circular path, an elliptical path or a figure-8 path. Alternatively, in a three dimensional arrangement (see figure 2), the controller can select a plurality of guns so as to position the centre of source at a selected depth. Positioning devices 135 (eg GPS) are used to indicate the position of the centre of sources 155(1), 155(2) of the seismic sources 150(1), 150(2). |
