A method for controlling a servo 58 for an actuator 44, 46, 48 that applies force to pistons 18, 20, 24, 26 that reciprocate in cylinders 12, 14 of a free piston engine is disclosed. The servo has a first 60 and further 76 states at which and energy source 42 (e.g. high pressure hydraulic fluid) is connected to the actuator for developing a reciprocation of a piston with progressively increasing displacement by controlling the servo until sufficient kinetic energy is developed to produce fuel-air charge combustion. To account for the servo response period (e.g. pressure rise in an electro-magnetic valve) a servo control signal is switched when the length of time for the piston to move from its current position to a desired position (e.g. just after a dead centre position to achieve maximum force) equals the length of a response period of the servo. |
