An electrostatic precipitator (80) including a cylindrical tube (81) the upp er end of which is provided with a gas outlet (87) while the lower end is provided wit h a gas inlet (88). Mounted adjacent the upper end of the tube (81) is an ion source (95). Adjacent the lower end of the tube (81) is a diaphragm (92) which is vibrated by an ultrasonic transducer (93). A liquid is supported on the diaphragm (92) and caused to vibrate in order to produce a mist. An electric potential is established between the io n source (95) and the liquid so that carbon particles contained in the gas stream passing through the precipitator are trapped by liquid droplets which are then conveyed back to a reservoir for the liquid. |
