The device comprises a scraper which is height adjustable and extends beneath the barrier in order to remove material such as sand and gravel. The scraper is automatically swung away from the barrier when it strikes a barrier post and then returns into the cleaning position after it has passed the post. The cleaning device is mounted on a vehicle.
