PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of surely supplying a sufficient amount of exhaust gas to a reforming device and of favorably propelling reforming reaction utilizing exhaust gas. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine 1 which can propel reforming reaction by utilizing exhaust gas from a combustion chamber 2 to obtain a prescribed fuel constituent, is equipped with an exhaust passage 8 for circulating exhaust gas from the combustion chamber 2, a reforming device 10 which is connected to the exhaust passage 8 and which includes a reforming catalyst for propelling the reforming reaction, and a branched passage 16 which is branched from the exhaust passage 8 in a branch part BP specified on the upstream side of the reforming device 10 and which leads exhaust gas toward a tale pipe 18. Fluid resistance in the exhaust passage 8 between the branch part BP and the reforming device 10 is set smaller than that in the branched passage 16. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
