PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display device capable of displaying a video image having color reproducibility most suitable for a video image content without troubling a user and further without dropping a dynamic range, and also capable of displaying a video image with color balance intended by a provider regardless of use of different video display devices. SOLUTION: A reference value selection circuit 42 refers to a table in a reference value storage memory 43 having tabulated data of a luminance level reference value of each semiconductor light emitting element at the color temperature most suitable for each genre information, on the basis of reproduced genre information 40 to select and supply the luminance level reference value most suitable for the reproduced genre information 40 to a comparison circuit 44. The comparison circuit 44 compares a light intensity measurement value from a sensor 31 for measuring the intensity of light from a light source, with the reference value and obtains a difference signal per primary color light and supplies it to a control circuit 46. The control circuit 46 sets the quantity of output primary color light of a semiconductor light emitting element array 22 to set the level most suitable for the reproduced genre information 40 through a driving circuit 47.
