PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-emitting element with excellent light-emitting characteristics and a novel metal complex which can be suitably used for it. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element is provided with at least a layer of a light-emitting layer between a pair of electrodes, a tridentate or higher ligand at at least one layer between the pair of electrodes, and contains at least one kind of the metal complex with a chained ligand.
