PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus with which uniform electrostatic charge is possible without the occurrence of ripples in spite of an increase in a process speed. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is successively mounted with a contact discharge type electrostatic charger 21, an exposure device 3, black toner and color toner development machines 4a to 4d, a primary transfer means 51, a photoreceptor cleaner 6, and a destaticizing lamp 7 sequentially from an upstream side on the circumference of the photoreceptor 1 and is formed with toner images of black and white or colors by known electrophotographic processes. For example, the downstream side of the electrostatic charger 21 is provided with an injection type potential smoothing means 22. The uppermost layer of the photoreceptor 1 is provided with a potential smoothing layer by adding organic compound having a reduction potential ranging from -0.8 to 0 eV to, for example, a saturated calomel electrode to the layer.
