PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display device that enables a user to control the direction of a display picture to an easy-to-see direction even when the video display device is installed having its display screen substantially in parallel to the ground surface. SOLUTION: A detection part 13 outputs a 1st detection signal indicating the distance to a body present in the direction shown by an arrow (a) and a detection part 14 outputs a 2nd detection signal indicating the distance to an object present in the direction shown by an arrow (b); and a detection part 15 outputs a 3rd detection signal indicating the distance to an object present in the direction shown by an arrow (c) and a detection part 16 outputs a 4th detection signal indicating the distance to an object present in the direction shown by an arrow (d). A control circuit selects the detection signal indicating the shortest distance among the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th detection signals and controls the direction of a picture displayed on the display screen 11 so that the bottom of the picture is on the side corresponding to the detection part having outputted the selected detection signal.
