<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a face of an object from being decayed in white or dull in the case of correcting the density of a digital image. <P>SOLUTION: An average signal value obtained from a photographed image P1 is compared with a prescribed reference value and it is determined whether correction is applied to the photographed image to brighten or darken the image. Only when the correction is applied to brighten the photographed image P1 in a determination step, a correction image P2 each pixel of which has a correction signal value resulting from correcting a signal value Y of each pixel of the photographed image P1 by a prescribed correction amount is generated.
