PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet printer capable of detecting the residual quantity of ink in a main tank accurately with no extra cost increase. SOLUTION: The ink jet printer 1 comprises a main tank 6 for storing ink, a recording head 4 for forming an image by ejecting ink from a nozzle to a recording medium P, an ink supply path 7 for supplying ink from the main tank to the recording head, a subtank 8 provided in the way of the ink supply path and temporarily storing ink supplied from the main tank, an ink supply valve 82 provided in the ink supply path between the main tank and the subtank and controlling ink supply from the main tank to the subtank and interruption of ink supply by opening/closing the valve, and a control section 20 for estimating the residual quantity of ink in the main ink tank by measuring the accumulated time when the ink supply valve is opened.
