PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical engine capable of increasing positioning accuracy in adjusting the position of an image forming element (liquid crystal display element). SOLUTION: The optical engine used for the projection display device is equipped with the reflection type image forming element, an optical unit having at least one of a color separation optical element and a color composing optical element, and a holding plate holding the back side of the reflection type image forming element and positioning it with respect to the optical unit.
