The device has two grapple arms (2) that are introduced in a separation gap between a formed book cartridge and a new book cartridge in formation. The grapple arms are displaced in parallel to a stacking table (4) of an automatic horizontal stacking device in a synchronous manner at a stacking speed of the table to install a front board at the front of the new cartridge and to install a rear board at the back of the formed cartridge. An independent claim is also included for an automatic device for horizontal stacking and transfer of books in the form of stacked book cartridges.
