PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mass centering method and an apparatus, capable of computing the position of the principal axis of inertia of a work to be inspected, without requiring a means for changing the axis of the work to be inspected or having to determine an expression for determining the position of the principal axis of inertia through the use of an analytical technique by accurately measuring the shape, mass distribution, etc. of a work of the same type as the work to be inspected. SOLUTION: A first work for test of which the amount of right and left eccentricity is known is rotated at a prescribed number of revolutions to measure a first measurement value, based on the unbalance caused by the amount of eccentricity. A second work of which the amount of right and left eccentricity is known and different from that of the first work is rotated at the prescribed number of revolutions to measure a second measurement value based on unbalance caused by the amount of eccentricity. On the basis of the first measurement value, the second measurement value, and a third measurement value caused by the rotation of the work to be inspected at the prescribed number of revolutions and based on unbalance of the work to be inspected, an influence coefficient for computing the amount of eccentricity of the work to be inspected is computed.
