PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst for olefin polymerization, which provides an olefin polymer having a high molecular weight in high activity and to provide a method for olefin polymerization by using the catalyst for olefin polymerization. SOLUTION: The catalyst for olefin polymerization is obtained by bringing a polyfunctional organic halide (C) and a transition metal compound (A) of the group 4 of the periodic table containing one or more ligands having a cyclopentadienyl skeleton in this order into contact with a suspension containing a solid carrier and an organoaluminumoxy compound (B), and, if necessary, further bringing at least one or more compounds selected from an organoaluminumoxy compound (B) and an organoaluminum compound (D) to the suspension.
