PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vibration damping device of a balancing rope of an elevator, easy in its installation with a simple structure, and capable of improving comfortableness when a car travels by damping vibration propagated to the car from the balancing rope when the car travels. SOLUTION: This vibration damping device has the car and a balancing weight mutually lifting in the inverse direction in a hoistway of the elevator, a main rope for suspending the car and the balancing weight, a hoisting machine having a driving sheave wound with this main rope, the balancing rope for correcting weight unbalance of the main rope by a car position, a rope detaining device fixed to one end part of this balancing rope and connecting the balancing rope to the car, a vibration damping part arranged in one end part of the balancing rope under this rope detaining device, and a connecting means for connecting this vibration damping part and the rope detaining device in a relaxed state.
