PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dressing method for the surface of a continuously cast slab, by which saving in energy and equipment is realized by using at least one plasma torch corresponding to a position, a shape, and the like of a defect detected, and to provide a dressing device, by which the dressing method is effectively executed. SOLUTION: A detected defective part on the surface of a continuously cast steel slab is automatically melted and restored by using plasma heating, whose horizontal cross-section shape is partly deformed corresponding to the shape of the defect. The defect is preferably detected by employing one or more of an image processing method, a leakage flux method, and an operational abnormality and defect detecting method as a detection means.
