PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem in a conventional consumable multi-electrode arc welding method in which, while welding is performed for filling a crater with one only consumable multi-electrode, wires of other consumable electrodes not in use come into contact with a weld pool to become welded on completion of welding as a possibility and in which, in the occurrence of this situation, an automatic welding machine such as a welding robot is prevented from continuing an operation thereafter. SOLUTION: The method makes it possible to avoid contact between the weld pool and all wires by having a means for moving the entire torch in a direction away from the weld pool when a crater welding is performed in a welding completing zone. In addition, for all other wires as well as the welding wire involved in the crater welding, the method is designed to confirm the welding and, in case a welded wire is present, to enable the welding to be released by making a welding current flow again to such wire.
