<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an IPS (in-plane switching) mode liquid crystal display which has a simple configuration, and in which not only the display quality but also the viewing angle is remarkably improved. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device contains a first retardation area 18, of which the anisotropy of the refractive index is positive and of which the optical axis is in a direction practically perpendicular to a layer surface and a second retardation area 10 of which the anisotropy of the refractive index is negative and of which the optical axis is in a direction practically parallel to the layer surface, and a cell holding a liquid crystal layer 14 between a pair of substrates 12, 16, between two polarizing films 8, 20 where their absorption axes are orthogonal to each other, wherein, liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer are aligned in parallel to surfaces of a pair of substrates in black display time. The retardation Rth of the first retardation area in the thickness direction is (-40)-(-250) nm, the in-plane retardation Re of the second retardation area is 50-400 nm, and the slow axis 11 of the second retardation area is orthogonal to the slow axis direction 15 of the liquid crystal layer in the black display time. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
