PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for sufficiently enhancing the melamine production-inhibiting effect of an ascorbic acid compound. SOLUTION: The subject skin care preparation for external use is characterized by containing (1) ascorbic acid and/or its derivative and (2) centaureidine having a chemical structure of the formula and/or its salt in an amount of 0.001 to 1 mass %. The ascorbic acid and/or its derivative are preferably an ascorbic acid phosphate, ascorbic acid-2-glucoside or its salt. The centaureidine is preferably prepared by subjecting an alcohol extract of a plant in the family Compositae to a solution extraction using ethyl acetate and water, concentrating the ethyl acetate phase, and then subjecting the concentrated phase to a fractional purification with column chromatography using silica gel as a carrier. The plant in the Compositae includes Achilea millefolium, Centaurea cyanus, Tanacetum parthenium, Acroptilon repens, Smallanthus sonchifolius, Lepidium meyenii, and Eupatorium rebaudianum.
