PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a low-cost biaxial oriented plastics substrate usable by forming a polarizing film on the liquid crystal side of at least one substrate out of a pair of substrates and using a birefringent substrate for at least one substrate out of the pair of substrates.

SOLUTION: In a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display device 1 having a liquid crystal layer 13 sealed in a space formed by placing an active substrate 11 and a counter substrate 12 opposite to each other and holding a gap between the active substrate 11 and the counter substrate 12 with a spacer arranged between the substrates, a first polarizing film 14 and a second polarizing film 15 are formed on the liquid crystal layer 13 sides of the active substrate 11 and the counter substrate 12 and the birefringent substrates are used for the active substrate 11 and the counter substrate 12.
