PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a reduction in amount of suction air at the time of performing learning of a sensor during fuel cut and to improve combustion stability/responsiveness at the time of fuel recovery. SOLUTION: A variable valve train which continuously changes a lift characteristic of a suction valve according to a rotating position of a control shaft, is provided for each of right and left banks. In a predetermined learning condition operation state including the fuel cut (step 1), the lift characteristic is so manipulated as to be minimum (step 3, step 12). Based on an output of a control shaft sensor at that time, the reference position of the lift characteristic is learned/compensated (steps 4 to 9, steps 13 to 18). A predetermined delay timeΔD is provided between completion of the learning/compensation of the right bank and a start of the learning/compensation of the left bank (step 8), whereby the timings of learning of the left and right banks are made different from each other.
