PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus capable of properly emphasizing a sharpness sense of an image by suppressing occurrence of an unnatural jump in a gradation change around a contour. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus is provided with: a contour information extraction section 10 having a band limit section A11, a differentiator 12, and a gain adjustment section 13; and a signal generating section 20 having a latch section A21, a latch section B23, and a weight arithmetic section 23. A contour information extraction section 10 extracts contour information from an input image signal, the signal generating section 20 generates an output image signal by using a weight coefficient of each pixel generated on the basis of the extracted contour information and the input image signals of pixels configuring the contour and a plurality of the pixels around the vicinity. The amplitude of the contour information can be variable with characteristic information of an input image. More suitable contour correction corresponding to contents of the input image can be attained by determining whether the input image is a scenery image or characters or the like.
