PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact optical scanner in which the dimension in subscanning direction is reduced. SOLUTION: An SOS sensor 34 is included in the maximum dimension in subscanning direction which is the vertical width occupied by a polygon mirror 12, an fθlens 14, a first cylinder mirror 16, a mirror 18, and a second cylinder mirror 20. The SOS sensor 34 is included in the maximum dimension (range shown as a in the figure) in the subscanning direction occupied by the polygon mirror 12, the fθlens 14, the first cylinder mirror 16, the mirror 18, and the second cylinder mirror 20 by turning back an SOS beam which is reflected on a pickup mirror 30 and turned back in the direction approaching to a face to be scanned but not a conventional direction separating from the face to be scanned. Thus, the SOS sensor 34 does not project in the subscanning direction and the width in the subscanning direction, i.e., the dimension in the vertical direction, of an optical scanner 10 is reduced.
