PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the read precision of image information from being degraded due to the soiling of a read surface by cleaning the read surface of an original platen. SOLUTION: The document reader is provided with an optical reflection sensor 17 for detecting closed states of read surfaces A and B of platen glass 11a and 11b, a cleaning means 50 for cleaning the read surface while moving back and forth on the read surface of the platen glass 11b, and a driving means 60 comprising a coil spring 61, an electromagnetic clutch 63, a motor, etc. While the read surfaces A and B are completely opened from the completely closed state, the coil spring 61 is pulled out to move the cleaning means 50 from a home position P to a stop position Q. While the read surfaces A and B are completely closed from the completely open state, the coil spring 61 is wound by its own elastic force to move the cleaning means 50 from the stop position Q to the home position P.
