PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which has a lubricant coating device and wastes a less amount of lubricant and an image forming apparatus which can apply a lubricant to an image carrier of a proper amount even if image formation conditions are changed and form many visible images free of an image defect. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has the image carrier which is rotated and the lubricant coating device which coats the surface of the image carrier with a lubricant, and the lubricant coating device comprises a lubricant supply part which is formed of a lubricant roller formed of the lubricant and rotated and a lubricant coating member which is rotated to coat the surface of the image carrier with the supplied lubricant. The lubricant roller is driven by the lubricant coating member or peripheral speeds of the lubricant roller and lubricant coating member are mutually different. At least one of the lubricant coating member and lubricant roller is rotated by an independent driving source and the rotating speed is varied in accordance with the cumulative number of prints or changed image formation conditions.
