PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing device capable of quickly performing focusing operation when high image quality is not especially expected in a machine loaded with a high pixel CCD. SOLUTION: The automatic focusing device is provided with a function for changing the moving quantity of a focusing lens for each sampling when sampling a focus evaluation value in accordance with a compression ratio set by a recording image compression ratio setting means.
