The invention relates to a method for coating a non-metallic or metallic substrate surface. In order to adapt the haptic and physical characteristics of the surface of the object to the surface of a metallic object, a highly conductive metal or metal oxide is deposited on an adhesive base of the substrate as a base layer at a certain thickness while the surfaces are treated such that the haptics of the coated substrate correspond to the haptics of a metal substrate, the surface treatment determining the appearance thereof, whereupon a metallic decorative layer is deposited on the base layer, and a transparent protective layer is applied to the decorative layer.
