<p>Dibenzofuran-, dibenzothiophene- and fluorene derivatives (I) are new. Dibenzofuran-, dibenzothiophene- and fluorene derivatives of formula (I) are new. Y : O, S, S(O), S(O) 2, CH 2, CF 2, CCl 2, CHF, CHCl, C(CF 3) 2, CHCF 3, C(CN) 2or CHCN; X 1>-X 3> : H, halo, CN, SCN, NCS or SF 5; A 1>, A 2> : 1,4-phenylene (where=CH- is replaced once or twice with=N- and optionally substituted up to 4 with -CN, -F, -Cl, -Br, -I, 1-6C alkanyl, 1-6C alkoxy (both optionally substituted with F and/or Cl), 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1-4-cyclohexadienylene (where -CH 2- is replaced once or twice with -O- or -S- and the heteroatoms are directly bonded and optionally substituted with one or more of -F, -Cl, -Br and/or -I); Z 1>, Z 2> : single bond, double bond, -CF 2O-, -OCF 2-, -CH 2CH 2-, -(CF 2) 2-, -CF 2CH 2-, -CH 2CF 2-, -(CHF) 2-, -C(O)O-, -OC(O)-, -CH 2O-, -OCH 2-, -CF=CH-, -CH=CF-, -CF=CF-, -CH=CH- or -Ctriple boundC-; R 1>, R 2> : H, 1-15 and/or 2-15C alkanyl-, alkoxy-, alkenyl- or alkynl (optionally substituted with -CN, -CF 3, F, Cl, Br and/or I and where in one or more CH 2can be replaced with -O-, -S-, -SO 2-, -CO-, -COO-, -OCO- or -OCO-O- and the heteroatoms are not directly bonded), -F, -Cl, -Br, -I, -CN, -SCN-, -NCS or -SF 5(when m or n is greater than 1, then A 1>, A 2>, Z 1>, Z 2>, R 1>and R 2>are same and when n is 0, X 1>is F, X 2>is F or H and X 3>is H, then R 2>is not H); and m, n : 0-3. An independent claim is also included for a liquid crystalline medium with at least two liquid crystalline compounds comprising (I); and an electro optical display element comprising the liquid crystalline media.
