An improved efficiency IC engine has the timing retarded to provide enhanced leverage onto the connecting rod (4) during the main burn. The compression ratio of the engine is also increased sufficiently to ensure adequate compression at the start of the retarded ignition. The amount of ignition retardation is between 15 and 20 deg. The ratio of enhanced compression to the compression at the start of ignition is between 1.4 and 1.1.
