A cost effective method for producing a secure licence plate for a vehicle has a base support layer onto which is applied a multi layer structure which includes the plate identity symbols. At least two layers comprise the multi layer structure and the plate is secured by pressing macroscopic patterns into the areas not covered by the symbols. The multi layer structure includes a reflective layer.
