A fuel cell system (100) having: a fuel cell (108), the fuel cell 108 having a membrane-electrode assembly (110); a fuel reservoir (102) containing a liquid fuel; a conduit (106) coupling the fuel reservoir (102) to the fuel cell (108); and an electrokinetic fuel pump (104) coupled to the conduit (106) to move fuel from the fuel reservoir (102) through the conduit (106) to the fuel cell (108) without deleteriously affecting the performance of the membrane-electrode assembly (110).
