<PICT:0977654/C1/1> <PICT:0977654/C1/2> A non-implosive glass vacuum vessel is provided by means of a strengthening metallic annular band 4 or bands 7, 8, the shape of which is adapted to the periphery of the wall of the bulb 1, 2 to be strengthened, at least one band of which has internal dimensions greater than the outer dimensions of the wall and the space between is filled with a hardening synthetic material 5. An intermediate layer 6 consisting of an adhering synthetic material, such as polyvinyl acetate, may first be provided on the bulb 1, 2 or on the band 4 or 7, 8 to facilitate the positioning of the band on the bulb. Glass or like fibres may be incorporated in the layer 6. The layer 5 is preferably a non-saturated polyester resin and glass fibres may also be incorporated therein. Modified materials for layer 5 and hardening agents are given. Fillers, colouring agents and conductive elements may be incorporated in the layer 5. A conductive outer layer may be provided and the glass wall may first be strengthened by a glaze layer as in Specification 976,508. |
