The runner's or bicycle rider's breath shield (1) has an elastic rim (3) consisting of an elastic plastics wire. The breath shield is oval in shape and may consist of a porous membrane or a mesh of woven or felted fibers (2). The breath shield fits inside the user's lips and outside of the teeth and can filter the inspired air and prevent ingestion of insects and other foreign bodies. The elastic plastics wire is thin at the top (4) and bottom (6) of the breath shield to give greater flexibility at these points and is thick at the highly-curved regions at the sides (5).
