The method involves determining an offset between an optical axis (10) of an optical unit and an axis of symmetry (410) of a reference geometry. A sleeve is provided that serves to receive an optical waveguide that is oriented in relation to the optical unit, and has hole that defines an axis of symmetry (420). The sleeve is arranged in relation to an optical module such that the symmetry (420) coincides with the optical axis. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) an optical module comprising an optical unit (B) an optical module constructional kit comprising an optical unit.
