The device produces a print impression (8) on a print cylinder (1) by means of a laser whose laser writing head (7) fixed on a crosshead (3) moves parallel to the cylinder axis. By this means, space-saving secure functioning is achieved, so that a protective switch (10) on the crosshead can transmit the prescence of the cylinder. The crosshead contains two switch bars (5,6) which leave a space (b) the width of the print impression for the laser head to move and which work together with a further protective switch (11) on the head to turn off the laser outside the laser head deployment area.
