The seal has a non-rotating slide ring (105) formed as a cylinder having a variable inner diameter that defines a profile (115) forming a cross-section of the slide ring and corresponding to a matching profile of a rotatable shaft (101) for engagement. Independent claims are included for the following (A) a method of mounting a slide ring of slide ring seal on rotatable shaft; and (B) a vacuum pump.
