A water pump (10) includes a pump body (12) and a block (11) which are respectively provided with attachment surfaces (14) that surround an opening defined by a vortex chamber (16). A first one of the attachment surfaces (14) is provided with an annular groove (29). An annular sealing member (31) is embedded in the annular groove (29). A sealing mechanism for the water pump includes the annular sealing member (31) having a protruding segment (32) protruding from a periphery of the annular sealing member (31) such that the protruding segment (32) extends outward from an outer periphery of a second one of the attachment surfaces (34); and the annular groove (29) having a branching groove segment (33) which branches out from the annular groove (29) and is provided in the first one of the attachment surfaces (14) such that the protruding segment (32) is embedded in the branching groove segment (33).
